Dozens of Ethiopian fleeing from the Tigray war were seen crossing the Tekeze river by the Al Fushqa district in eastern Sudan, on Tuesday.

The refugees, including women and children, were seen unloading their belongings from boats and walking alongside the river bank with their livestock.

"First they were threatening us, and then they started insulting and beating our father and brothers, then the bombing started, so we fled," explained a refugee.

"[They] Terrorised us in our homes, so I ran on my feet until I got here. I lost my sons and I know nothing about them," said another Ethiopian migrant.

The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) has accused Ethiopia's government, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, of carrying out attacks on civilians, including bombings, shooting, and looting. Ahmed alleges the operations are targeting militant fighters.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), nearly 46,000 Ethiopian nationals fled to neighbouring Sudan since the start of November, 2,500 of which were registered on Friday alone.

The increasing numbers of refugees are already overwhelming the capacities of the country and are raising concerns about sanitation and hygiene according to UNHCR.

SOT, Nqasti, Refugee (Tigrinya): "They intimidated us in our homes. I walked away until I got there. I lost my children and know nothing about them."

SOT, Manleen Haile Selassie, Refugee (Tigrinya): "First they threatened us, then they began insulting and beating our father and brothers, after that they attacked us with grenades, so we fled."

SOT, Emmanil Qarysos, Refugee (Tigrinya): "We went out since the beginning of the war. Dr. Abiy Ahmed told us to go back to our homes since the country is safe, so we came back, but all we found was torture. I was imprisoned for 13 days, they took me out at night to beat me, have they no respect? They shoot and stab others, so many were killed. Now we cannot return even if we want to. Dr. Abiy Ahmed says something and does another. The chief gave us three-day deadline to leave or all Tigrayans will be killed, and we saw this [inaudible]."

SOT, Refugee (Tigrinya): "How can I return while people are being slaughtered in the streets? How can I?"

SOT, Mehreteb, Refugee (Tigrinya): "How can I go back my friend? My cattle are lost there and my cart is in Ruwayan. We haven’t brought anything with us. The Red Cross revived us and provided us with a mattress and blanket. And so we waited."
