Uruguay's new president inaugurated

Tabare Vazquez on Sunday was sworn in as the new president of Uruguay in Montevideo, capital of Uruguay, succeeding Jose Mujica.

The 75-year-old cancer doctor Vazquez took the oath during a ceremony at the National Assembly Sunday. The swearing-in ceremony took place at 12:46 p.m. local time, with the attendance of presidents of several other Latin American countries, including Brazil's Dilma Rousseff, Cuba's Raul Castro, Chile's Michelle Bachelet.

This is the second time that Vazquez serves as Uruguay's president. His first term was between 2005 and 2010.

Mujica, whose term ran from 2010 to 2015, handed the presidential sash to Vazquez and urged Uruguayans to support the new president.

After the usual protocol, Vazquez addressed an audience of thousands of people. He expressed thanks for his election victory and called for dialogue on issues such as improving public education, health and housing.
