GitHub recently released a new developer productivity tool called GitHub Copilot and it has people asking the question: when will AI replace programmers? It's important to resist the temptation of saying never, because when you look at the tools available today and where the industry is going it's only a matter of time. I this video I will tell you precisely when AI will replace programmers.

AI will replace programmers (one day). It's really only a matter of time, and while The Terminator predicted that this day would come, it's important to realize this isn't a doom and gloom scenario. First of all, computers aren't that great at coding today. While it is true that Kite, Tabnine, and GitHub Copilot are able to offer great code suggestions, all of those lack the awareness necessary to solve truly complex problems. Software engineers are more than just machines that push out code, we are problem solvers that can translate business requirements into complex system designs.

Once computers gain the ability to reason and can translate business requirements into technical solutions they will need to test their solutions. Testing in itself can be fairly complicated as it requires to not only understand the requirements, but you also have to understand what could cause those requirements to fail in unexpected ways. Deep learning is helping to move AI programming forward at an incredible rate though and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw most programming jobs replaced entirely by the year 2040.
