BEHIND-THE-SCENES Old School Martial Arts Movies

Most people didn't have camcorders shooting behind the scenes footage back then. We did. Here's some old raw vhs clips of me kicking and punching star JEFF WINCOTT in MARTIAL LAW 2: UNDERCOVER and my stunt buddies PETE ANTICO, CHINO BANAMO and KOICHI SAKAMOTO in MISSION OF JUSTICE.

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGER fans might be interested to see Koichi (who is now the producer of Power Rangers) and myself back in the days of direct-to-vhs action flicks pre-MMPR.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER fans might find it amusing that this is actually where the Buffy fighting style came from.

Originally Joss Whedon considered me "the Power Ranger guy" and was afraid I would make Buffy start dancing like a gymnast cheerleader and flipping around on wires. Plus, someone at the studio had suggested that Buffy should be an after school show similar to MMPR for kids with Buffy as sort of a Pink Ranger fighting Vampires. He had other ideas. Then when he saw clips of me fighting in these films he said, "That's the style I want for Buffy."

In MISSION OF JUSTICE I had already featured Koichi as another character and I couldn't use him in the "Chop Shop" fight scene. Then I noticed an Asian crew member had a ponytail like his. So I had the crew member play the "face" of the baddie and had Koichi do all the stunts. Later on I would do the same thing with Sarah Gellar as the "face" of Buffy and Sophia Crawford doing the fights and stunts.

So, the ironic thing is that even though Joss hated Power Rangers, it was seeing the two Power Ranger guys (myself and Koichi) and the Pink Ranger (Sophia) in action that led to the development of Buffy's fighting style in the show.

And, fortunately for me, MISSION OF JUSTICE was a film Sophia rented while she was still making Hong Kong movies. When she saw me in it she decided that when she finally traveled to Hollywood she would find a way to meet me. And that's just what she did. :)
