The Rev. Kirsten John Foy, spokesman for the Consumers for Fair Legal Funding (CFLF) coalition, shares his story of falling victim to the lawsuit lending industry after he was seriously injured at the hands of NYPD officers. Financial difficulties caused by his injuries and subsequent surgeries forced Rev. Foy to borrow against a future legal settlement to cover his family’s expenses – including his newborn baby. But due to the out-of-control interest rates changed by the unregulated lawsuit lending industry, he owed the bulk of his settlement to the lender. The industry targets vulnerable New Yorkers at their most desperate moments. It must be reformed NOW.
