UK announces record Covid deaths as hospitals “overwhelmed” - BBC News
The United Kingdom has recorded 1,610 Covid deaths in a single day — the highest number since the pandemic struck last year.
Experts say it's likely that even higher figures will be reported in the coming weeks. The Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine say that many hospitals are “overwhelmed” with some staff “almost on their knees” after many months treating desperately ill patients.
The number of new infections is beginning to fall and more people are receiving vaccinations.
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting from Clive Myrie at the Royal London Hospital and by medical editor Fergus Walsh.
