US vs Russia war games ahead of Biden, Putin meeting as 'relations hit an all-time low'

THE US scrambled F-22 fighter jets and a carrier strike group to face off with Russian war games near Hawaii ahead of a showdown meeting between Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, it was revealed on Tuesday.

The two leaders are set to meet in Geneva on Wednesday for crunch talks for the first time since Biden was sworn in as president in January.

n response to the Russian Navy conducting what officials called its largest exercise in the Pacific Ocean since the end of the Cold War, US defense officials said that on Sunday said that USAF F-22s were dispatched to meet Russian bombers near Hawaii.

Russia's exercise, which took place about 300-500 miles west of Hawaiian shores, includes surface ships, anti-submarine aircraft, and long-range bombers.

The US sent the fighter jets to respond to the bomber flights, but the bombers didn't enter the Air Defense Identification Zone and were not intercepted.

US officials also said a US carrier strike group headed by the USS Vinson was operating about 200 miles east of Hawaii.

That exercise was planned, but moved closed to Hawaii in response to Russia's military activity, it emerged Wednesday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday said Russia's relations with the U.S. had deteriorated to their lowest point in recent years. 

Putin's comments in an interview aired on U.S. television network NBC on Monday, two days before he is to meet U.S. President Joe Biden in Geneva and underline the tensions between the two countries.

"We have a bilateral relationship that has deteriorated to what is the lowest point in recent years," Putin said. Putin also said former U.S. President Donald Trump "is an extraordinary individual, talented individual, otherwise, he would not have become U.S. president," Putin said.

As for Biden, Putin said the current U.S. president "is radically different from Trump because President Biden is a career man.

He has spent virtually his entire adulthood in politics." Asked if he agreed with Biden’s comments in March that he is "a killer", Putin laughed and said the criticism was part of America's harsh rhetoric.

"I’ve gotten used to attacks from all kinds of angles and from all kinds of areas under all kinds of pretext, and reasons of different caliber and fierceness and none of it surprises me," he said. "So, as far as harsh rhetoric, I think that this is an expression of overall U.S. culture," Putin added.
