Behavior Management Script

Hey guys, its Dr. Sami and Dr. Ashley and today we are going to talk about how we keep your kid comfortable in the office

Behavior guidance techniques are used in the dental office to help ease anxiety & discomfort while promoting cooperativeness. Based on your child’s age, different techniques may be used.

& parents can help guide their child before your appointment even begins.

First, try not to mention words such as “shots” or “pain.” This will make your child unnecessarily nervous for their first visit. (skit), “if you don’t behave the dentist will pull out all your teeth & it will be painful”
Second, try to avoid negative statements about the dentist since it can definitely contribute to your kids anxiety. (Skit) “I hate going to the dentist” “it hurts going to the dentist”, rather try to say positive things that promote the visit. “ man my teeth feel so clean. Dr. Sami that guy is just extra special.

While at the dental office, various techniques are used to explain procedures to the child. One common technique is “Tell-Show-Do.” First, The dentist will take extra time to “tell” in child-friendly details what he/she will be doing. (skit) “ok Charlie were gunna use mr whistle to clean out your sugar bugs but firs were gunna put your tooth to sleep.” “YAYYY” The next step is to “show” the child the instruments before they are placed in their mouth. “so this is the straw and you canyou’re your lips over it. do you wanna try?” The last set is “do” and the dentist will complete the procedure. “were all done here charlie. that was a smooth appointment “shake hand”

Another management technique is voice control. Voice control is used to gain the child’s attention, prevent negative behavior, and establish an appropriate adult-child role. What this means is that the dentist may change the tone of his/her voice so the child understands that in the dental setting he/she needs to follow the dentist’s instructions. “Charlie I need you to stop flailing your legs. I don’t want you to hurt yourself.” “Ok dr. Sami!) This is not to be confused with “yelling,” but is a technique used to stop counter-productive behavior.

The last two techniques we want to talk about our distraction & positive reinforcement. Distraction is meant to do just that. Distract! The child may be asked to play “Simon Says,” be told a story, or watch movie to help distract from the procedure. ( simon says wiggle toes) &

Positive reinforcement is also employed to promote good behavior. The dentist will praise the child for good behavior or offer a toy at the end of the appointment if he/she behaves.
