POWER STRUGGLE IN LAMU

The proposed 1000 megawatt coal fired power plant in remote Lamu county of northern Kenya would have severely affected the environment, according to scientists and activists. Yet despite the danger emissions would have posed to people, mangroves and water quality along this pristine coastline, the plant had moved quickly through the approval process, until local residents got involved. They were worried about the impact on their scenic and ancient town and their health and organized a Save Lamu campaign to try and block the plant's construction. It would have been the largest emitter of CO2 gases in Kenya, but the Kenya courts have just put a stop to it, citing incomplete environmental impact assessments.
