Curiosity's view of the Martian moons Phobos passing in front of Deimos – in real time 1 August 2013

On August 1, 2013, NASA’s Curiosity rover captured a rare and mesmerizing sight — Mars’ larger moon, Phobos, passing in front of the smaller moon, Deimos, in real time. 🪐✨

This incredible celestial event, recorded from the Martian surface, shows two moons in motion — a phenomenon never before witnessed by human eyes. Phobos, the closer and faster moon, appears as a dark shadow gliding across Deimos, which orbits farther away from Mars. 🌌🔭

The observation helped scientists refine the orbital paths of both moons and better understand their gravitational interactions and tidal effects on Mars. Each frame of this event is a reminder of how alive and dynamic the Martian sky truly is. 🌙💫

From its lonely post in Gale Crater, Curiosity not only explores the Martian surface but also gazes upward, connecting us to the cosmic dance happening above another world. 🚀❤️
