Digging beneath culture wars' froth on race, gender, abortion, and climate—really battles over belonging, biology, family, and reality—Kingsnorth sees a deeper existential unraveling like Rome's fall but planetary: we've split atoms, coded genomes, poisoned earth and bodies with microplastics, blanked stars, climate-altered via fossil blood, and noded ourselves into an inescapable grid accelerating modernity's telos to replace nature (wild and human) with god-making technology, unleashing Lewis Mumford's "radical transformations" into an "anticulture" of inverted virtues where progressive ideologues and corporate capitalists—hippies-turned-billionaires—sail a superyacht of borderless, boundary-hostile, religion-suspicious utopia, waging war on inheritance via self-abnegation, ancestor abuse, monetized sins (Pride Month cheers), and institutional radicals razing traditions for "justice" rubble. Politics, economics, and science fall short, he argues; cultures throne a sacred order—once Christendom's for the West—now usurped by the Machine's totalizing logic, birthing nihilism, homelessness from roots, and Leonard Cohen's blizzard overturning the soul's order, demanding we confront why the West breaks forms in endless "make it new" revolutions from Marx to Rand.
