Create Small File Size, High Quality Exports - DaVinci Resolve

NOTE: I’ve had a lot of questions about why some of the export options I showed don’t appear for everyone.
Here are the main things to know:

Constant QP (CQP):
• On Windows/Linux, CQP shows up if Resolve can use your GPU’s hardware encoder (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel).
• If Resolve is falling back to CPU encoding (common in the Free version or on unsupported GPUs), CQP won’t appear.
• On macOS, CQP is never available in Free or Studio, because Apple’s VideoToolbox framework doesn’t support it.

Free vs Studio:
• The absence of CQP isn’t because it’s “locked” to Studio.
• It’s tied to how Resolve encodes video (hardware GPU vs CPU, and what the OS supports).

AV1 Encoding:
• Currently not available on Mac at all, because Apple’s VideoToolbox doesn’t include AV1 support.
• On Windows/Linux, AV1 may show up if you’re on supported hardware (newer GPUs).

👉 Bottom line: If you don’t see CQP or AV1, it’s not a bug in Resolve and it’s not because you’re on the Free version… it’s due to the combination of your OS, hardware encoder, and what that platform supports.

⚠️ IMPORTANT!
There is NO "Best Settings for Export". It all depends on what the goal of your export is.
But this video was exported using th. very last export option I showed, decreasing the file size by almost 60%.
If you set the YouTube viewer to it's highest playback resolution, it should look as clear as all of my other Shorts on YouTube!

Here are the export tips I mentioned:

🎬 How to Shrink Export File Sizes (Without Wrecking Quality)
1. Forget the container

MP4, MKV, MOV — doesn’t matter.
Codec + settings = size. Container choice = peanuts.

2. Pick the right codec

H.264 → legacy. Use only if you need to support ancient devices.
H.265 (HEVC) → best all-rounder (efficient, widely supported, fast enough).
AV1 → smallest files, best efficiency, slow as hell. Use if you can wait (YouTube loves it).
👉 Default: H.265.
👉 Use AV1 if you’re patient or need ultra-small sizes.

3. Ditch CBR/VBR — go Constant QP

Constant Bitrate (CBR) → wastes bits. Dumb unless a broadcaster forces it.
Variable Bitrate (VBR) → predictable file size, inconsistent quality.
Constant QP (or CRF in ffmpeg) → gold standard. You pick quality, encoder decides bitrate.
👉 I recommend Constant QP.

4. Use sane QP values

QP 18–20 → near-lossless, balloon files.
QP 22–24 → Goldilocks zone (sweet spot).
QP 28+ → meh quality, only for “YouTube will butcher it anyway.”
👉 Best defaults: QP I=22, P=23, B=24.

5. Preset & tuning

Preset: Fast → bigger files, faster export.
Slow / Very Slow → smaller files, same quality, longer export.
Tuning: High Quality = plenty. Ultra High Quality = marketing fluff, slower with almost no gain.

6. Don’t waste bits on audio

AAC Stereo 128–192 kbps = transparent for most content.
320 kbps = overkill unless it’s music.

Format: MP4 (or the best choice for things like transparency)
Codec: H.265 (or AV1 if patient)
Rate Control: Constant QP
QP: I=22, P=23, B=24
Preset: Slow
Tuning: High Quality
Audio: AAC, 128–192 kbps stereo
Result: High-quality, high-res exports at 30–50% smaller sizes than H.264.
