Former French president Sarkozy convicted of corruption and sentenced to prison

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to a year in prison after being convicted of bribery.

Mr Sarkozy was found guilty of offering a judge a top job in exchange for information about an investigation into him in 2014, after he left office.

However, the former French president claims he was a victim of unfair persecution by investigators and intends to appeal the decision.

Mr Sarkozy served as French president from 2007 to 2012
