This Old iPhone Had No Right To Look This Good

I found some iPhone footage from over 10 years ago and I thought it looked surprisingly good. This video/photos were shot on an iPhone 4 back in 2015 during one of my first solo travel trips - to Cuba. Looking back over my hard drive I couldn’t believe how well it held up.

When I arrived in Havana I had no currency, no pesos or dollars - the ATM in the airport didn’t work - so I was just there with no signal, no wifi and no plan. Fortunately I found myself staying with a local family and spent a week or two hanging around the city, sharing rum, exploring the city. The vintage cars and motorcycles and old colonial buildings - it felt like a sort of time capsule. Riding in one of those cars listening to The Beatles I felt some kind of culture shock.

In this video I talk about how modern phones process everything so cleanly and over 'correct' - but this old iPhone has a natural, almost 3D look. Shadows stay dark, highlights stay bright, and the imperfections make it feel alive. The stabilisation is non-existent or no way near as good as modern cameras though but nevertheless the old tech surprised me.
