Customer Tried To Negotiate AFTER I Fixed Her AC!

On today’s HVAC service call, I responded to a no-cooling air conditioner complaint and quickly found a low-voltage short that was preventing the outdoor unit from running. After diagnosing the system, I discovered a failed contactor causing the electrical issue and also found that the outdoor capacitor was testing below its rated specifications.

I explained the problem to the homeowner and provided two repair options: replace only the bad contactor or replace both the contactor and weak capacitor to improve reliability. The customer reviewed the options, approved the repair, and agreed to the price before any work began. After replacing the contactor and capacitor, I got the AC system back up and running and restored cooling to the home.

The surprising part happened when it was time to collect payment. After approving the repair and seeing the system working again, the homeowner tried to negotiate the price because she felt she couldn’t afford it. This raises an important question: should customers negotiate before the work starts or after the repair is already completed?
