FANUC Delta Robot Uses Vision to Locate, Pick & Insert Bolts Into Engine Casting

FANUC America offers manufacturers a wide range of ultra-fast Delta Robots – from 3 to 6 axes of articulation, and from 0.5 to 12 kilograms in payload, FANUC’s unique Delta Robots can be applied in a variety of applications and industries to help maximize production and productivity.
In this demonstration, a FANUC M-3iA/6A Delta Robot is used to pick bolts from a tray, and insert them into an engine casting. It accomplishes this through the use of iRVision 2D, FANUC’s intelligent robot vision feature that allows the robot to see the bolts on the tray, then check bolt length on the fly before placing them onto a rack. Bolts that are not the correct length are taken to a reject bin. Once all bolts are located and racked, the robot picks and places each bolt into the casting. A fixed camera inspects each bolt to ensure that all of the bolts are fully inserted. Finally, the casting tips and dumps the bolts back on the tray and the cycle repeats.
The FANUC robot chosen for this application is the FANUC M-3iA/6A Delta Robot. This robot has a 3-axis wrist, making it ideal for complex tasks and enabling the robot to pick up and twist and insert parts at simple or compound angles. The FANUC M-3iA/6A also includes a 6kg payload, and best-in-class work envelope of 1350 x 500 millimeters.
