Ukrainian troops take back control of eastern town
(29 Mar 2022) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4373172
Ukrainian forces appear to have retaken the town of Trostyanets in the country's east from the Russians.
Associated Press reporters on Monday saw Ukrainian soldiers atop tanks, being greeted by the local residents.
They also saw numerous destroyed Russian tanks and military equipment and abandoned boxes of ammunition.
Residents told AP that fierce battles preceded the withdrawal of Russian troops.
One woman said she was glad to see the back of the Russians, who she called Orcs, after the evil, goblin-like fictional creatures.
In recent days, Ukrainian troops have pushed the Russians back in a number of areas of the country.
A senior US defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, on Monday said Russian forces were making little forward progress.
The official said Russia appeared to be de-emphasizing ground operations near Kyiv and concentrating more on the Donbas.
The predominantly Russian-speaking region is where Moscow-backed rebels have been waging a separatist war for the past eight years.
