Brief History of NUESTRO PADRE JESUS NAZARENO

The Black Nazarene is a life size of Jesus Christ carrying the cross, popularly known as “ Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno “ when translated in English means “ Our Father Jesus The Nazarene “. The statue, a work of a Mexican, whose name is unknown, painted the image of Jesus Christ in dark brown color, said to be similar to his own skin. It was brought to Manila, through the Galleon, by the first group of Augustinian Recollect friars in May 31, 1606. When it arrived in the Philppines the color turned darker which is why it was called as “ Black Nazarene”. It was enshrined at the first Recollect Church in Bagumbayan ( now Rizal Park ). Inaugurated on September 10,1606 under Saint John The Baptist Patronage.

In the year 1608, the image of Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno was transferred to the second bigger Recollect Church dedicated to San Nicolas de Tolentino, completed inside Intramuros, the walled city in Manila.

In the year 1787, the Archbishop of Manila, Basilio Sancho de Santas Junta Y Rufina, ordered the transfer of the Nazareno to the Church in Quiapo, which is still placed under the patronage of Saint John the Baptist.

Through the centuries, the image survived great fires that destroyed Quiapo Church in 1791 and 1929, the earthquake in 1645 and 1863 and the destructive bombing of Manila during the World War II in 1945.

Over the years, the Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno has grown exreme popularity all throughour the Philippines. Every Friday, Catholic devotees flock to the Church of Quiapo to pray before the image of the Black Nazarene.

For more than two centuries, the statue is placed on a carriage every January and pulled through the streets of Quiapo. The procession and the Feast of the Black Nazarene, takes on January 9 every year, a large festival in the Philippines.
