Excel Beginners Tutorial | Number Formatting | Module 1 Lesson 8 (Part 1)

Mastering Number Formatting in Excel

Excel offers multiple ways to format numbers, but the Format Cells dialog box gives us greater flexibility and precision.

🔹 Accessing Number Formats – Press Ctrl + 1, then Alt + C to explore different number categories. By default, numbers are in General format, but we can modify their appearance.

🔹 Number Format – Ideal for adjusting decimal places, adding thousand separators, and formatting negative numbers (I prefer them in red!).

🔹 Currency vs. Accounting –

Currency (Alt + S for Symbol) places the currency next to the number. Even Bitcoin is an option!

Accounting aligns the currency symbol to the left and numbers to the right, giving financial reports a structured look.

🔹 Percentages & Text Conversion –

% Format is perfect for financial statements (e.g., Profit %).

Text Format is useful for data like barcodes (00180091), preventing Excel from removing leading zeros.

🔹 Date & Time Formatting –

Choose from multiple date and time styles like dd-mm-yy or custom formats to match reporting needs.

🚀 Next Steps? We’ll explore how to customize number formats beyond the built-in options! Stay tuned.
