“ Mana Kai “ - Lagoon 77' Barbuda. Total loss .

This new five month old high end Lagoon 77’ Catamaran left Antigua for Barbuda , arriving there late afternoon in the area of the “ River Wharf “ on the island’s south coast , the only commercial landing site on the island . It is a heavily reefed and dangerous area to navigate in the best of conditions and this yacht had no right to be in that area . In spite of the owner’s and the maté’s strong reservations about the area , the captain persisted and sure enough they ran aground and a large limestone head . We were called to render assistance, and by the time we got there some four hours later the vessel was a total constructive loss. The job was immediately converted to a wreck removal . The insurers just wanted the hull moved well offshore and away from the coastline .We filled the severely damaged pontoon with airbags ( to shallow and to much rock to get them under the hull ) , and
eventually refloated it and managed to keep it afloat till we got it to North Sound Marina , Antigua where it was slipped .
A businessman from Barbados surprisingly bought it and had the damaged pontoon rebuilt. The hull is still on the hard at the Marina and work seems to have stopped .
