At one place the water source was just a big water tank, no doubt needing to be filled up every now and again. Children would still appear out of nowhere with waving hands and yells of “hi” or “how are you?” At one point we headed into the Chalbi desert, where we found a tiny place with palms to make our bush camp for the night. What a magical setting.
And, of course, we got bogged down in sand; it had to happen at least once. That took a good two hours to dig out and navigate through using sand mats. We had just finished when a school trip arrived with a bus and a four wheel drive truck. We watched as the four wheel truck got stuck, thinking there was no way the bus would ever get though. We left them to it, but saw the truck the next day. They had passed us during the night. They had used the truck to pull the bus through, but in doing so had stuffed the clutch.
Finally we made it to the main road, where, for 29 kms, we could drive at a reasonable speed. Sorry for the short post but we are on our way to the Ethiopian border and I want to post this with my Kenyan SIM card before it is of no use. Bush camp tonight, so no wifi for a while. See you in Ethiopia!
