Mechanics of Ferroelectrics

Ferroelectric materials provide both an exciting and complex field as properties are anisotropic and the anisotropy and the switching state changes as function of electric field, mechanical stress and temperature. In applications and therefore properties we distinguish small signal properties and large signal properties which have a difference in driving field of about a factor of 1000. The mechanics plays a different, usually considered as a very convenient, role. Since the understanding is widely limited, it serves as a convenient argument: “Not fully understood properties are related to the stresses in the materials”. Small signal properties like piezoelectric coefficient and permittivity are impacted by many mechanisms and warrant detailed investigations. The intimately related small signal mechanical properties appear to provide fundamental understanding but are rarely considered. So, I provide an example. Large field mechanical properties are discussed in terms of far field mechanical loading, with a general slide and an example of compressive stress loading. Then comes a correlation from combined electrical and mechanical loading.
I follow with mechanical strength of lead-free piezoceramics (a fundamental but ill-understood property) and ferroelastic toughening.
