Arthur Rubinstein was born on January 28, 1887 in Łódź, Poland and died on December 20, 1982 in Geneva. He was one of the major piano performers of the 20th century. Born the seventh child of a family of Polish weavers in the city of Łódź, his family was of the Jewish faith. While his older sister took piano lessons without showing much interest, young Arthur, only four years old, tried to render familiar melodies on the keys. His talent recognized early on, his parents took him to Aleksander Różycki, a respected piano teacher. Without much success, as the latter was constantly sleeping during Arthur's lessons. His parents, however, do not give up.

He gave his first concert in his hometown in 1894, and in 1898, the violinist Joseph Joachim took him under his protection, sent him to study at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin and recommended him to the piano teacher Heinrich Karl Barth. There he learned all the basics necessary to become a virtuoso pianist during seven years of demanding studies. He began his career in the German capital and soon began to play in other countries, especially in Poland.

But it was not until the 1930s that the pianist really enjoyed an international reputation. Indeed, until then, great pianists such as Sergei Rachmaninov or Josef Hofmann overshadowed Rubinstein, and more generally all other pianists. But the 1930s marked the end of the careers of these two giants, and left room for the "young" ones. Most of them are not very interesting and are not very good at playing the piano. Rubinstein, with his romantic temperament, found his place: both successor of the great post-romantic pianists and representative of a new generation.

During the Second World War, he moved to the United States and became a full-fledged American citizen in 1946. In 1954, he moved back to Paris, a city he would remain in love with, on Avenue Foch, in the house he owned before the war (and which had been requisitioned by the Gestapo). He will refuse forever to perform on German soil after the 1914-1918 war. He then lost several members of his Polish family during the Holocaust of the second world war. However, he gave concerts on the borders of Germany for the German people who appreciated his art. As a great lover of life, he continued to travel the world and with his family for thirty years, despite the onset of blindness in 1975. His last concert took place on June 10, 1976 in London. He died at the age of 95, still young and full of humor but almost blind.
