Vikings in Wirral - West Kirby, 25th October 2001

Alan Newry of BBC North-west Tonight and Professor Steve Harding visit West Kirby and call in on local man Keith Sherratt as part of the Wirral and West Lancashire DNA project using modern DNA analysis and the male Y-chromosome (passed along the paternal line with little or no change) looking for Viking ancestry
The project studied two populations of men from both areas. A "modern" population based on men from either area who had paternal grandfathers from either area (with samples taken as part of the 2001 national 'Blood of Vikings' survey) and "old" or "medieval" populations (samples taken in 2002) based on the additional criterion that men taking part from either area had a surname that was present in the area prior to 1600. These populations were compared with control populations across Europe.
The project, a collaboration between the Universities of Nottingham, Leicester and University College London, working with local organisations such as the West Lancashire Heritage Association, ran until 2007 when all the control measurements and statistical tests were completed, with the results announced at a meeting at Knowsley Hall, and published in 2008, with a book following in 2010.
