DICK THE BRUISER "The World's Most Dangerous Wrestler!"

The late notorious professional wrestler, William Fritz Afflis (1929-1991), known as Dick the Bruiser, was a popular showman in the ring with minimal scientific wrestling ability. His physical toughness was complemented by a gravel voice and his entertaining antics in and out-of-the-ring. In the Detroit area, he impulsively wrestled with Alex Karras (in the downtown Lindell AC bar), a former Detroit Lion football lineman. This trumped incident led to a highly-publicized wrestling match between the two rivals in the Motor City. The late Lou Gordon (1917-1977) was a frank radio news commentator who hosted a television show featuring interviews with the famous and the infamous. When 1968 presidential candidate George Romney visited, he said he was "brainwashed" by questionable information about the Vietnam War. The public and political controversy over his remark ended his campaign. Gordon's talk with Dick the Bruiser occurred in 1972 on WKBD-TV 50 in Detroit.
