The Puranas
The Puranas are ancient texts. There are major and minor Puranas, the former known as Mahapuranas. All Mahapuranas cover five topics – the original creation, secondary cycles of creation and destruction, descriptions of different eras, genealogies of gods and sages, and solar and lunar dynasties. But they contain much more than that. They are like encyclopedias. There are 18 Mahapuranas, all believed to have been composed by Krishna Dvaipayana Vedavyasa, the composer of the Mahabharata. Though translations exist in vernacular languages, some have never been translated into English. In conversation with academic and historian Pushpesh Pant, Bibek Debroy discusses his translation of Bhagavata Purana.
