RVing 1500 Miles in 5 Days! Moving Quick Out of Mexico | Newstates in the States

We're racing across the Southwestern US for a couple good reasons, but wow is it hot right now! After leaving San Miguel de Allende, we reached Tucson in just 5 days INCLUDING stopping for a few days in one of our favorite remote towns, Marathon, TX.

This week's episode we swept across Texas, with a visit to the small town of Marathon. Located almost 100 miles north of Big Bend National Park, Marathon is a great basecamp to explore Big Bend if you are unable to stay inside the park (like right now during COVID-19). We love staying at the Marathon Motel & RV Park (which is also a member of Passport America. Bonus!). Not only does it offer full hookups, beautiful courtyards and scenery, but when the skies are clear the manager offers free nightly stargazing parties featuring his collection of large telescopes! Located down the street is the famous, fancy, and fabulous Gage Hotel. If you're looking for a premium steakhouse, the restaurant on the grounds is your ticket to a great meal and premium cocktails. We also returned to the delicious sister property of the Gage, Brick Vault Brewery & Barbecue. During COVID-19 restrictions, the outside patio is open or you can get takeout. For a hotel-affiliated restaurant, Brick Vault is a premium price, but still provides good value with generous portion sizes of their delicious BBQ and sides.

Unfortunately, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis battery in our RV was beginning to show signs of failure, unable to hold a charge for even a few days. After speaking with Mercedes-Benz phone support, they connected us with two dealerships that could replace the battery under warranty. Only one had technicians available in a timeframe that would work for us, Tucson, AZ. After a few days visiting south Texas, we made a very early departure to reach Tucson in one long day.

Little known fact, Katelyn LOVES cacti (specifically Saguaro cactus), and Tucson is one of the best places to see a LOT of the them. We decided to stay, in the dead middle of summer, at the Gilbert Ray campground (a county park adjacent to Saguaro National Park West). This may sound a little crazy in 100deg+ heat, but thanks to 30amp electricity at every site, we could fight back the heat for one night with sweet A/C. Gilbert Ray is possibly Katelyn's favorite campground, thanks to the cactus in every direction AND in your campsite. Photos galore to follow.
