Compte tenu de son identification étroite avec la musique française, surtout dans la dernière partie de sa carrière, il est parfois surprenant que Walter Gieseking soit allemand. En fait, il est né en France, à Lyon, le 5 novembre 1895, son père étant un éminent entomologiste allemand. Pendant l'enfance du pianiste, la famille a beaucoup voyagé en France et en Italie, et il a reçu une éducation privée. Bien qu'il commence à jouer à quatre ans, il ne commence l'enseignement systématique qu'à seize ans, au Conservatoire de Hanovre. Les débuts de Gieseking ont lieu en moins d'un an, et à vingt ans, il donne un cycle presque complet des sonates pour piano de Beethoven.

Sa carrière est interrompue par la Première Guerre mondiale, mais il se fait rapidement remarquer par ses programmes aventureux, dont des partitions de Szymanowski, Schoenberg, Busoni et Hindemith, alors peu familières. Il se produit pour la première fois à Londres en 1923, à New York en 1926 et à Paris en 1928. Depuis lors et jusqu'à sa mort - à Londres le 26 octobre 1956 - Gieseking a connu une renommée et un succès mondial. Malgré le raffinement exceptionnel de ses interprétations d'œuvres françaises, son répertoire s'étendit bien au-delà et, contrairement à certaines personnalités internationales comparables, il s'écouta attentivement jusqu'à la fin.
