Kangaroo Mating, part 1: Courtship

A male kangaroo checks his females constantly for breeding condition. He can tell by smell what stage of ovulation the female is at.

As the female near ovulation, the male stays close. Then he starts
Step 1 of the pre-mating / courtship ritual: stroking the tip of her tail with his hands. This goes on for hours, the female hopping away, male following and repeating Step 1.

Tail stroking progresses up the tail, getting closer to the base, then to Step 2: Back stroking.
