Imilab EC2 - Outdoor Smart Security camera for Xiaomi Mi Home? Full Walkthrough Review [Xiaomify]

The Imilab EC2 is a wireless, battery-powered security camera. It has a very slick and small design and is designed to be mounted outdoors as it's IP66 waterproof.

The EC2 comes with a dedicated HUB that is included, and this hub connects to your router for remote viewing and to send alert notifications. This hub has a Micro-SD card slot to record footage on to a SD-card (up to 64GB) but additionally, the recorded shots are saved in the cloud through the Mi Home APP for 7 days as well. The HUB can connect to your router over WiFi or Ethernet and the camera can be connected to this HUB.

The Hub allows you to pair multiple cameras to a single hub, although at the time of reviewing I could only do this when I was using the EU-servers but not through the China mainland servers although I do expect this to be supported on all servers.

The EC2 has a microphone and speaker for 2-way audio communication but the audio was not all that great and depended on the network connection. It also comes with an infrared sensor to film in the dark.

The footage, especially during the day, was good. At night it captures the footage very well although this slightly depends on the distance and camera placement. It captures 1920x1080P HD footage in the H.264 codec.

The EC2 has an internal 5100 mAh battery that should last for about 100 days, or 3 months. I have tested mine for about 3 months and still had battery-life, so I can confirm that this is true.

Overall I am very happy to see that there are now outdoor security cameras that are supported by the Mi Home APP and I am happy with the EC2. I would love to see the EC2 appear in the camera-tab in the Mi Home APP to get quick access to all my security cameras around the house. This is something that the XiaoVV camera that I have also tested DOES do.

When comparing the EC2 with the XiaoVV (also on sale through the Xiaomi Youpin APP in China) I did find the EC2 to be a better choice. The XiaoVV is quite a bit bigger, it's not wireless, it's image quality with the 180˚ fisheye lens was very blurry around the edges, the APP functionality was very buggy and it has its SD-card in the camera itself.

So especially when comparing these two cameras I did find the EC2 to be the better choice; even though it's about double the price here in China.
