Can I Screw Up My Hydraulic System with Rented or Borrowed Equipment YES!

Got questions from two viewers about co-mingling hydraulic oil from rented or borrowed attachments with their tractor's hydraulic system. Basically, they were wanting to know if when they plugged the hydraulic lines in, if the oil from the previous user's tractor would contaminate theirs. The short answer is, "it could."

When you plug any hydraulically-powered attachment into your tractor, the oil from that implement migrates through your tractor's hydraulic system. There's no way around it, short of draining the cylinders, hoses and hydraulic motors before using. That's a big hassle and the chance of getting every last drop of hydraulic oil out of the attachment is pretty low. So, it's going to mix with what's in your tractors sump.

There are a couple of things that make me not worry a lot about this situation, though. First, your tractor's hydraulic filter is going to catch any contaminants before they do any damage. Second, the amount of oil that each attachment will send into your system is fairly negligible. Third, tractor hydraulic systems are fairly forgiving. They'll usually quit working when a filter is clogged or the oil has an issue, then when the filter is changed, they'll go back to working again. There's less of a wear issue there than there would be with engine oil.

In the end, if you're worried about the contamination possibility of rented or borrowed equipment, you can change hydraulic filters and/or oil more often when using them and your system is safe.

I would also recommend only renting from a yard that keeps their equipment in top shape, cleans it thoroughly between uses, and maintains it regularly. It wouldn't be a bad idea to ask them what type of hydraulic oil they use in their tractors and how often they change it. That will tell you a lot about what type of operation it is.

I also recommend not borrowing attachments from a friend that never maintains his equipment. If he's okay with plugging remote couplers in to the tractor when they're covered with dirt and grease, you can bet the oil in his tractor will be dirty and a risk for contamination, should you borrow his attachments.

In the end, there's no guarantee that the hydraulic oil from any rented or borrowed equipment won't dilute the oil you use now. However, in my mind, the risk is pretty low.
