How AWS Crashed Half the Internet, And Nobody Could Stop It
How AWS Crashed Half the Internet, And Nobody Could Stop It
The internet was designed to survive nuclear war.
But it couldn’t survive an update from AWS.
On October 20th, 2025, a routine DynamoDB update inside Amazon Web Services triggered a catastrophic chain reaction:
➤ DNS stopped resolving
➤ Load balancers started misrouting
➤ 113 AWS services collapsed
➤ Banking, airlines, payments, e-commerce, and hospitals froze
People couldn’t access money.
Flights couldn’t be booked.
Even Amazon.com went dark.
All because ONE update from ONE company failed. And here’s the uncomfortable truth nobody likes to discuss: If AWS crashes, the internet crashes. We spent 40 years building a decentralized internet to survive nuclear destruction, yet today, one private company controls the backbone of our digital world.
⏱️ TIMESTAMPS
Intro — 0:00 – 2:10
Chapter 1: HOW AWS ACTUALLY WORKS (The Setup) — 2:10 – 3:32
Chapter 2: WHAT WENT WRONG ON OCTOBER 20TH (The Breakdown)— 3:32 – 5:05
Chapter 3: THE MULTIPLIER EFFECT (The Scale) — 5:05 – 5:47
Chapter 4: THE HYBRID APPROACH— 5:47 – 7:15
Conclusion: The Mindset Shift— 7:15 – 7:48
⚠️ Question for the comments:
➡️ If decentralization was the dream, why did we let AWS become a single point of failure?
➡️ Should one company have this much control over the internet?
🔔 Subscribe for more deep-dive breakdowns on:
Cloud failures • Digital infrastructure • Data centers • Cybersecurity
👉 If the internet has become fragile… someone needs to talk about it.
