The Illusion of 'Now' | Carl Taylor | TEDxPCL
What if everything we experienced had already happened? Well… it has. The half-second delay is a very real phenomenon that explains the process from something happening to it registering in the human brain. What’s more, the same is true of our actions. Do humans really have free will, or are we defined by pattern? After a career in business and consulting, Carl has migrated over to making a passion of his a full time job. He now teaches psychology to A-Level students.
Everything you’ll see and hear during this presentation will have happened at least half a second earlier, which has profound implications for our view of ourselves, not least because it means we may be no more than passive observers within a unique virtual reality, being tricked into thinking we are ‘agents’ by neural pathways that antedate consciousness. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
