Labpano: 8K 360 Panoramic Camera and Cloud Streaming

Labpano, introduced by Jeffrey Martin, unveils its latest 8K 360 camera, claiming it to be the smallest in the market. The camera boasts a unique feature - cloud live-streaming, allowing direct streaming from the camera to the cloud. This cloud-based solution handles stitching and distribution of content. Labpano's lineup includes two cameras, both capable of streaming to the cloud. Additionally, the camera incorporates a V-Slam algorithm for shooting virtual tours, ensuring each image is correctly placed within the tour.

The 8K 360 camera is built on the open Android system, offering an open software development kit (SDK). This enables developers to create their own applications for the camera. Martin highlights the potential for customized shooting settings and the ability to upload content to personal services, leveraging the flexibility of the Android platform.

The V-Slam algorithm, discussed in the interview, facilitates the creation of virtual tours by accurately linking images based on the camera's understanding of spatial movement. While not currently generating a 3D environment within the camera, Martin suggests the possibility of such capabilities in the future.

The camera utilizes an onboard IMU accelerometer device and sophisticated AI algorithms to precisely track its movement. The aim is centimeter-level positioning accuracy, providing a foundation for immersive virtual experiences.

Labpano's camera stands out in the panorama and video capture domain, supporting 8K resolution video with live stitching. The camera's live preview feature ensures users can monitor their recordings in real-time, though Martin notes that 8K video stitching is an intensive task that cannot be previewed in real-time during recording.

The interview touches upon Labpano's previous models and reveals that the new 8K camera, slated for release in February, is a smaller but technologically similar version to its predecessor. The pricing details are yet to be announced and will be revealed at CES.

Martin emphasizes Labpano's expertise in panoramic stitching algorithms, developed over eight years. The company initially focused on providing these algorithms for other hardware manufacturers before venturing into producing its own 360 cameras.

The Labpano device is not only a camera but also a 5G-enabled device, enabling live streaming of 8K content over 5G networks. It comes with accessories like a waterproof case and a protective case for added durability.
