Synopsis:
The prophet Jeremiah witnesses the Babylonian siege of Solomon’s Temple, which stood for approximately 400 years, and burned to the ground. Jeremiah gives five poetic portrayals of the horrors throughout the book of Lamentations.

The prophet Jeremiah warned King Zedekiah to turn away from sin or face judgment. Zedekiah shows no concern to the ominous prophecies by Jeremiah, nor does he repent. In the ninth year of Zedekiah’s rule, a Babylonian army laid siege to Jerusalem after he had conspired to revolt against the Babylonians with Egypt’s help. During the siege, the prophet Jeremiah urged patient submission to the dominion of the Babylonians, which he regarded as the will of God, but he was denounced, accused of desertion, and imprisoned.

The Babylonians catch Zedekiah and his sons attempting to flee and they are taken to Assyria to face the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar. He forces Zedekiah to witness the execution of his sons. Nebuchadnezzar then permanently blinds Zedekiah and throws him into a prison cell. The story of Zedekiah is detailed in the Second Book of Kings, chapters 24 and 25, and in various passages in the Book of Jeremiah. The last poem of Lamentations contains a prayer that implores the LORD for mercy and help. Lamentations ultimately teaches that even amidst terrible judgment, God is a God of hope (Lm 3:24-25).
