Johann revisits .....sofferte onde serene... by Luigi Nono for piano and electronics. In collaboration with composer Benjamin Gueit, as well as videographer Joran Juvin, he created SOS (in) ambisonics, a reinterpretation in which Nono’s original tape part is projected through space, with the piano placed at the center of a hemispherical array of loudspeakers (an ambisonic system).
By adding an introduction, a dramaturgical framework, and rewriting the live piano part from the moment the performer stands up to leave the keyboard, Johann offers a new reading of the Italian composer’s work. Far from pointing to any supposed shortcomings in Nono’s writing, this approach is intended as a tribute: it draws on his style and his fascination with the spatial exploration of sound in order to open the work toward new directions, through the use of technologies that did not yet exist at the time of his death.

Johann s'empare de ..... sofferte onde serene... de Luigi Nono pour piano et électronique. En collaboration avec le compositeur et réalisateur en informatique musicale Benjamin Gueit, ainsi qu’avec le vidéaste Joran Juvin, il a conçu SOS (in) ambisonics, une réinterprétation dans laquelle la bande originale de Nono est projetée dans l’espace, le piano se situant au centre d’une demi-sphère de haut-parleurs (système ambisonique). En ajoutant une introduction, une dramaturgie, et en réécrivant la partie de piano live à partir du moment où l’interprète se lève pour quitter le clavier, Johann propose une nouvelle lecture de l’œuvre du compositeur italien. Loin de souligner d’éventuelles insuffisances de l’écriture de Nono, cette démarche se veut au contraire un hommage : elle s’appuie sur son style et sur son goût de l’exploration spatiale du son pour ouvrir l’œuvre à de nouvelles directions, grâce à l'emploi de technologies qui n’existaient pas encore au moment de sa disparition.
