Driveway entry gate - DIY

My first metalworking project. Please leave comments.

update (2/14). Wow, no idea this video with lousy music would generate so much interest! Let me answer a couple of commonly asked questions:

All tubing and scrolls were purchased through Kings Metals in Dallas. They have a fantastic catalog and one of their sales guys helped me come up with the design. The bent tubing can be purchased from them as well.

In 2009 the metal cost was around $800, with the scrolls being at least 2/3 of that expense. I had an extra fence panel of 1/2 in tubing that I can be seen cutting off to use in the middle.

The installer furnished the opener and mounted it for me. It was his decision to open outwards and place the installer on the outside. I have landscaped around the opener and is not really noticeable.

Splitting the gate in two pieces - probably the way to go due to the final weight of the gate - about #400 - but there is the additional expense of another opener.

In the last 5 years I have had to replace the gate opener and adjust the hinges once.

This gate is really in no way meant to be "secure" - one could easily walk around the gate on the uphill side - but it really is a nice way to close off the driveway and is a nice addition to our home.

This was truly my first metal project after taking a basic metal sculpture class and I sure learned a lot.

Thanks for your comments and keep 'em coming!
