David Chipperfield Designed Furla Flagship Store Opens in Piazza Duomo in Milan

Furla is an Italian fashion company focusing on leather goods, including accessories, purses, shoes and above all bags. It was founded in Bologna in 1927 and is still owned by the Furlanetto family. The new store concept was developed over the last year by David Chipperfield Architects Milan, with the direct involvement of Giovanna Furlanetto. It has been applied as the first prototype to the Milan store on the Piazza Duomo, which was completely refurbished during the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic.

The store concept proposes a strong material architecture with raw earth enveloping the walls giving intense and earthy colours to the spaces of the Store, which contain three different varieties of display furnishing. The staggered and repeated metal arches around the perimeters generate scenographic furnishing for displaying the products, while in the centre, the curvilinear, single and multi-legged tables in marble provide accent furnishings to present a concentration of products. The sculptural and rounded blocks of lacquered cabinets provide further furnishings for display and product storage.

The feeling of domesticity and finesse draws its inspiration from the DNA of Furla and the history of Bologna as well as contemporary art and the origins and interests of the Furlanetto family.

In February, Italian accessories label Furla unveiled its redesigned sans serif logo, its sleek typography inspired by arches found inside the palazzo of the brand’s Furla Foundation in Bologna. The city too is renowned for its signature porches. It’s this architectural element which has inspired the construction of the brand’s newly renovated flagship in Milan’s historic Piazza Duomo, designed by David Chipperfield Architects Milan.

Arches are a focal element, noted not only in the boutique’s architecture, but also in the curving shapes of fixtures and furnishings, formed from anodized aluminium. The store’s walls have a tactile finish, coated in rough plaster formed from different clays, which contrast with original enclaves and niches, which have been left intact.

Tactility is integral to the space, which also features smooth flooring formed from pastellone plaster, tables in lacquered wood and sugary coloured marble and circular hemp carpets.
