There are many things that we tradesmen (women) do that set us apart from the rest of the world. We work in harsh conditions, physically labor on a level others can’t and many different things that others either can’t do or don’t want to do. 1. Integrity- Doing the right thing, even when no one is looking. There are shortcuts in anything we do, but we shouldn’t take them EVERY time. If it feels wrong, then it probably is. Lack of integrity is the source of many of our problems. Do the job right. The end. Having Integrity will set you apart from those that do not. Also, once you establish the proper way to do the task at hand, continue to do it the right way every time.
2. Follow Through. If you say you are going to do something, then do it. Whether it’s to your apprentice, your coworker, your boss, or even the customer. The people working around you or that you are working for should be able to rely on you, whatever the situation is. If you lack follow through, then things will generally tend to snowball- and not in a good way. If your sub ordinates or co workers see you not following through on what you say, then they WILL tend to mimic you and the problems become site wide, not just one person.
3. Determination- the ability to suffer through something but continue to push through it. Lets face it, working in the construction, while very rewarding, is not all sunshine and roses! The weather will be inclement, you are going to be tired and sore, and the work may be excruciatingly awful (say you are hand trenching 250’ in the dead of summer!). Your ability to just get the work done, with a minimum amount of whining and negativity will set you apart from everyone else.
4. Creativity. There are many ways to accomplish EACH task. Being creative in your problem-solving approach is crucial to being great at what you do. Anyone can install an electrical box and pull wire to it (let’s face it, it’s not really rocket science!). But it takes someone who can think creatively to be able to have ideas to the more difficult tasks we face on a daily basis. As a note, when dealing with customers, try to have 3 solutions to their particular problem. The inexpensive way, the middle of the road, and one that goes outside the norm- so they can choose which works best for them.
5. Be Changeable. You must be flexible in this industry. Things are not going to always go the way you anticipate, need, or want them to! People will think of a different way to do something than what you had in mind! Put your EGO away and recognize it as an option. You will probably learn something in a way you hadn’t thought of. At the end of the day, their way will be just another metaphorical tool in your metaphorical toolbox!
6. Anticipate Need. Whether you are an apprentice or a seasoned veteran in the industry, having the ability to anticipate the needs of either the situation or those around you is crucial. Apprentices should see that their journeyman is running low on staples or boxes and go grab more BEFORE they completely run out. As a seasoned vet, if you see someone struggling with a task, and are about to hurt themselves or break something, go over, and offer assistance. Successful teams don’t even need to speak much. They can just keep an eye on their teammates and anticipate what they will do and what they will need.
We hope this has been an insightful look into the 6 traits that tradespeople should have to be successful. Is there a topic you would like to see discussed on Electrician U?
