Freshman guard Nah'Shon "Bones" Hyland (Wilmington, Del.) was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference's All-Rookie Team, the league announced Tuesday on the eve of its championship tournament. Hyland is the first VCU player to earn A-10 All-Rookie honors since Melvin Johnson in 2012-13. In addition, junior forward Marcus Santos-Silva (Taunton, Mass.) was named to the league's All-Academic squad. A 6-foot-3 guard Hyland is averaging 9.0 points and 2.2 rebounds per game for VCU in 31 games, including nine starts. He's shooting .434 (63-of-145) from 3-point range, which ranks third in the Atlantic 10. Hyland's 63 three-pointers this season broke the VCU freshman mark of 59, held by B.A. Walker since 2003-04. He's scored in double figures 13 times this year, including a 21-point outburst in a win over St. Bonaventure on Jan. 18. It was the most points scored by a VCU true freshman since 2014. Hyland has been even better in conference play. The Wilmington, Del. native is averaging 11.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in league play, while shooting .465 (46-of-99) from 3-point range.
