WW2 - North Africa 1942 Desert Memorials

Slideshow of a number of cemeteries and memorials in North Africa during World War II. These previously unpublished photographs from the North African campaign, circa 1942, were taken from the personal photo album of a member of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

Included is a photo from the El Alamein Cemetery of the plot and 'headstone' of Sapper H Leighton of the 16th Railway Operating Company, 2/NZEF who was killed in service on the 25th October 1941 in North Africa. Leighton was the fireman of an Allied train that ran into the back of another stationary train at night. The stationary fuel train was not showing any lights, as per wartime regulations, and the Egyptian driver of Leighton's engine did not see the rear of the stationary train in front of them.

Lest We Forget.
