HVAC Service System Head Pressure Fault Multiple Problems Repaired
During an air conditioning maintenance and find the condenser locked out on high pressure lock out. Therefore I have to find out what caused this switch to open and lock out the condensing unit. The first thing I noticed was the condenser coil was dirty and restricted of air flow. Not having enough airflow through condenser, preventsthe condenser coil to reject heat correctly. As the temperature inside the condenser rises so does the pressure. Therefore the high-pressure switch opens as a safety to protect the compressor.
I take all the panels off the condensing unit exposing the coil. Then I spray water from the inside of the condenser through. I push all the dirt and debris off the coil. Then I soap up the coil. Afterwords I rinse all the coil cleaner off and make sure the coil is clean.
I I tested the operation of the AC system. The system was running with almost no superheat. Having those superheat is an indication of an overcharged refrigerant system. I know the filters clean that also can drop the superheat really low. Another thing is lack of airflow. Yet this condensing unit was slugging back liquid refrigerant. Therefore I grabbed an empty recovery cylinder. I recovered some refrigerant out of the unit. Until I dropped a sub cooling down to 3° of sub cool. My superheat went from 1° superheat up to 15° of superheat.
