Autumn Statement: Jeremy Hunt's tax cuts are 'pure electioneering' | Analysis

The British people will carry the heaviest tax burden since the Second World War despite cuts to National Insurance announced in the Autumn Statement.

Taxes as a share of GDP will hit a new post-war high of nearly 38pc by 2029 according to official forecasters the OBR, having stood at 33pc before the pandemic.

It came as Jeremy Hunt announced that National Insurance will be cut by two percentage points from January in a measure that will help 27 million workers.

The Chancellor announced that the levy will be cut from 12pc to 10pc in a move that will save someone on the average salary of £35,000 more than £450 a year.
