Pedestrian crossings provide a safe location for people to cross the road with priority over the traffic, they are designed to be seen easily, because of warning signs, flashing beacons, traffic lights and zig-zag road markings, in the zig-zag markings you are not allowed to overtake the lead vehicle or park on the zig-zag white lines.
The only uncontrolled crossing is a zebra, give way to pedestrians that ate crossing, or who are waiting to cross. Check your mirrors and be prepared to stop, when waiting at the crossing apply the parking brake.
There are several types of light-controlled crossings, puffin, toucan and Pegasus crossings all have a normal traffic light sequence. A toucan crossing a cyclist can ride across the crossings without dismounting. Pelican crossings are unusual as they show a flashing amber light after red, motorists should give way to pedestrians on the crossing when the amber light flashes but should proceed if the crossing is clear.
Watch out for school crossing patrols, they could be situated at a Pedestrian crossing, outside schools or near a junction, there could be flashing amber lights or a patrol sign as you get close to them if it's obvious to you that the crossing warden wishes to allow pedestrians to cross, check your mirrors and give way.
