The Peace We Seek (the New Reality from Corona Virus)

While watching the rapid changes happening with and around the Corona Virus (COVID-19), in particular the fear becoming visible in people, more in some cultures than others, we became aware that not all people contract in fear and become smaller and start suffering. The media either predicts Biblical pestilence and death, or makes it all a political tool. Peoples' usual behaviors, in particular around leisure time, hanging out and connecting suddenly are either illegal, or at the least perceived as dangerous, and therefor undesirable. So meeting and sharing become more challenging.

But not impossible. And if one dares to look at and embrace the positive side to what is happening, what becomes apparent is that simpler, more basic kinds of behavior around social gathering and sharing are being rediscovered. The economy is accelerating towards a complete meltdown, but activities like eating together, singing, dancing are still healing. These behaviors inherently induce a sense of connectedness and sharing, as opposed to being entertained by a superhero movie in which thousands of “bad guys” are shot or blown up, which one forgets the moment one leaves the theater and needs to “get over” like a headache before feeling grounded and whole again. And what is also possible to discover is that aloneness can be embraced, and the connectedness on a deeper level becomes available with the whole and our surroundings. Pollution is decreasing, blue skies are visible again, nature is able to rest and regenerate. And so are we.

So is it possible the effects of the Corona Virus (COVID-19) can include social healing and a return to a more balanced way of sharing and connecting as a culture? Time will tell. But I don’t think we have a whole lot of time.
