Northrop-McDonnell Douglas YF-23A Black Widow II / Removed to Museum

In the 1980s, the United States Air Force was looking for a replacement for its existing fighters, particularly against the Soviet Union's Suhoy Su-27 and Mikoyan MiG-29. In the competition, many companies submitted their designs for evaluation. Northrop and Lockheed's proposals were selected as finalists. Northrop partnered with McDonnell Douglas to develop the YF-23, while Lockheed, Boeing and General Dynamics developed the YF-22.

While the YF-23 was less visible to radar and faster than its rival, it was not as agile. After four years of development and evaluation, in 1991 the YF-22 was declared the winner of the competition and entered production as the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. The United States Navy was considering a design based on the production version of the Advanced Tactical Fighter as a replacement for Grumman F-14s, but this plan was later canceled. Both YF-23 prototypes are on display in museums as of 2010.
