"German baritone Christian Gerhaher made his Royal Opera debut in 2010 as Wolfram von Eschenbach (Tannhäuser) in an Olivier Award-winning performance. He has since returned to sing Olivier (Capriccio in concert) and Wolfram, and in concert with Antonio Pappano and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. In the 2018/19 Season he sings Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro).
Gerhaher studied under Paul Kuen and Raimund Grumach, attended the Opera School of the Munich Academy of Music and studied Lied interpretation (with his regular piano partner Gerold Huber) with Friedemann Berger. While completing his medical studies, Gerhaher took masterclasses with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Inge Borkh. He has sung his ‘key’ operatic role, Wolfram von Eschenbach, to acclaim in London, Berlin, Vienna and Munich. In 2015 he sang his first Wozzeck for Zürich Opera. Other key roles include Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa (Don Carlo), Pelléas (Pelléas et Mélisande), Monteverdi’s Orfeo, Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Don Giovanni and Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro).
Gerhaher performs in his Lied duo with pianist Gerold Huber at major international recital venues, including Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Berlin and Cologne Philharmonies and the Vienna Konzerthaus and Musikverein, and at festivals including those of Rheingau, Salzburg, Edinburgh and Lucerne and the BBC Proms. He has inspired contemporary works by composers including Heinz Holliger, Wolfgang Rihm and Jörg Widmann. His discography includes Lieder by Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf and Mahler, Bach’s Passions, Mozart arias, Schumann’s Szenen aus Goethes Faust, Britten’s War Requiem, and, in opera, Tannhäuser and Königskinder."; roh
