L'ambiente naturale è la prima attrazione della valle, iscritta nei siti Patrimonio dell'Unesco in primis perché testimonianza eccezionale del modo in cui il paesaggio è stato ridisegnato nel Rinascimento per riflettere gli ideali di buon governo e creare un'immagine esteticamente gradevole" e poi perché lo stesso paesaggio è stato celebrato dai pittori della Scuola Senese del periodo rinascimentale. Le foto hanno un profilo dolce, spezzato dai cipressi e da casolari solitari, spesso convertiti in agriturismi e relais.

In queste immagini si vede in particolare: La cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta è un edificio sacro che si trova nella località rurale di Vitaleta, nel territorio comunale di San Quirico d'Orcia, in provincia di Siena. La chiesa, di probabile origine tardo-rinascimentale, è ricordata per la prima volta in un documento del 1590. L'edificio religioso venne in seguito riprogettato sia esternamente che internamente dall'architetto Giuseppe Partini nel 1884, ispirandosi a modelli cinquecenteschi.

Altro luogo è la Località Terrapille. Ricorderete il premiatissimo film di Ridley Scott IL GLADIATORE, bene, è su questa collina, che si sono girate le scene del film in cui Massimo ricorda con triste amore la moglie e il suo bimbo uccisi mentre lui era in guerra. I proprietari dell’agriturismo, dicono che, per girare alcune scene sono serviti ben 15 giorni di preparazione, il tutto blindato da guardie del corpo lungo il perimetro della tenuta e la supervisione del luogo avvenne ben due anni prima dall’inizio delle riprese. Famosissima la scena di lui che accarezza il grano sulla collina posta proprio di fronte all’agriturismo e la moglie con il suo bimbo che gli corrono incontro dalla strada con i quattro cipressi !
