Another Country - Best Dialogue

Yesterday, I started watching Another Country. This is a very good movie. The movie was the debut of Colin Firth (Tommy Judd) and the first important film of Rupert Everett (Guy Bennet). Another Country talks about friendship, homosexuality, British Public Education and has some wonderful dialogues, such as this one. As I watched it, I had the idea of cut and bring to Youtube, because homophobia is not a problem of reactionary people, even the progressists can be homophobes, sexists and so on. This dialogue follows Guy Bennet (Rupert Everett) punishment and the awareness that he was really gay and was in love:

"JUDD: I don't understand. Why didn't you just use the blackmail again?

BENNET: Because.

JUDD: Because what?

BENNET: Because if I'd gone to Housemaster... it'd all come out about James.

JUDD: So what?

BENNET: We'd have both been expelled.

JUDD: Lucky you.

BENNET: I couldn't do that. I love him.

JUDD: Oh, come on, Guy.

BENNET: Look, I'm not going to pretend anymore. I'm sick of pretending! You think it's a joke. Well, it's not. I am never going to love women!

JUDD: Don't be ridiculous!

BENNET: Martineau knew that about himself when he was 10. He told me.

JUDD: You can't possibly know that at 10 or now.

BENNET: Yes, you can. Look, it doesn't come as any great revelation. It's... more like admitting to yourself something you've always known. Owning up to yourself. It's... It's a great relief... in some ways.

JUDD: You can't trust intuitions like that.

BENNET: Well, what else is there? Are you a communist because you read Karl Marx? No. You read Karl Marx because you are a communist.

JUDD: I'm very sorry for you.

BENNET: Thanks! If that's how friends react...

JUDD: I'm sorry. You're quite right. That was patronising and unforgivable.

BENNET: But you couldn't help it, could you? Because in your heart of hearts, like Barclay and Delahay and Fowler and Menzies, you still believe in spite of your talk of equality and fraternity,you still believe some people are better than others because of the way they make love. Well... (Sniffs loudly)..think of that for a lifetime. Think of the names. Pansy. Nancy. Fairy. Fruit. Brown-nose. Look... This hurts like hell. I'm... I'm... I'm gonna walk it off. Coming?"
Ontem, comecei a assistir Another Country (Memórias de um Espião). É um filme muito bom e foi a estréia de Colin Firth (Tommy Judd) no cinema e o primeiro filme importante de Rupert Everett (Guy Bennet). Another Country fala sobre a amizade, homossexualidade, critica o sistema de Educação Particular Britânico e tem alguns diálogos maravilhosos, como este. Enquanto eu assistia o filme, tive a idéia de cortá-lo e trazer para o Youtube, porque a homofobia não é um problema de pessoas reacionárias somente, mesmo os progressistas podem ser homofóbicos, sexistas e assim por diante. A cena ocorre logo depois da punição de Guy Bennet (Rupert Everett) e a tomada de consciência de que ele realmente era gay e estava apaixonado:

"JUDD: Não entendo. Por que não usou de chantagem outra vez?

BENNET: Porque...

JUDD: Por que... o quê?

BENNET: Porque se tivesse ido ao diretor... se teria sabido de James.

JUDD: E o quê?

BENNET: Teriam expulsado nós dois.

JUDD: Que sorte!

BENNET: Não posso fazer isso... eu o amo.

JUDD: Vamos, Guy.

BENNET: Não vou fingir mais... estou farto. Acha que é uma brincadeira, mas não é. Nunca vou amar uma mulher.

JUDD: Não seja ridículo.

BENNET: Martineau soube disso aos dez anos de idade e me disse.

JUDD: Isso não se pode saber nem com dez anos, nem agora.

BENNET: Sim... pode. Não é uma grande revelação. É admitir algo que sempre se soube. É um grande alivio.

JUDD: Não pode confiar em intuições como essa.

BENNET: Você é comunista porque lê Karl Marx? Não. Lê Karl Marx porque é comunista.

JUDD: Sinto por você...

BENNET: Assim é como reagem os amigos.

JUDD: Desculpa. Você está certo... Isso foi condescendente e inaceitável.

BENNET: Não pode evitar, não é? Porque no fundo, você, apesar da sua conversa sobre igualdade e fraternidade, assim como Barclay, Delahay, Fowler e Menzies ainda continua acreditando que umas pessoas são melhores que outras pelo modo como fazem amor. Pense nisso pelo resto de sua vida. Pense nos xingamentos como marica, viado, bicha, fadinha, fruta... Isso dói muito! Veja... Vou dar um passeio, vem?"
