SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER: What it is & How it Can Limit Your Life | Dr. Rami Nader

For many people, social interactions can be a huge source of anxiety and fear and this can contribute to Social Anxiety Disorder. Social anxiety involves intense fear or anxiety in social situations and generally occurs in performance situations (e.g., situations in which you might be observed by other people such as public speaking, participating in meetings) and interpersonal interactions (e.g., meeting new people, parties, dating, being assertive). The primary fears in social anxiety include 1) being judged as anxious, weird or boring, 2) Acting in a way that might show that anxiety and that other people will notice; and 3) Inadvertently offend someone and making them upset. Social anxiety does not just involve anxiety in social situations, but it can be associated with a lot of anticipatory anxiety in which a person worries and dreads an upcoming social event.

The primary method that people typically use to manage social anxiety is to avoid feared social situations as much as possible. However, if they cannot avoid the social situations, they will get through the situations with a lot of anxiety and/or engage in a variety of coping strategies aimed at reducing some of the social anxiety including: avoiding eye contact or speaking with a very soft voice; sharing little about themselves in conversations; avoiding talking to other people at a party or leaving a party early; trying to drift into the background and not be noticed; and self-medicating social anxiety with alcohol.

Social anxiety can lead to a number of problems and limitations in a person’s life including:
1) Social anxiety can limit a person’s career and work attainment.
2) Social anxiety can lead to limited interpersonal relationships and difficulty dating or forming romantic relationships.
3) Social anxiety can cause a person to avoid engaging in certain types of hobbies and recreational activities that would bring them into contact with other people and they may prefer solitary activities.
4) Social anxiety can interfere in day-to-day life activities like grocery shopping, going to restaurants or asking for directions.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that social anxiety can be so interfering in a person’s life, only about half the people who experience social anxiety will ever seek out treatment, despite the fact that effective treatments are available.
